I've been asked about some maiden aunts in my mother's father's family. Emma A Marshall, born in March 1863, and Adda Ralston, born in April 1865, were sisters of Albertus McLaren Marshall, my great grandfather.
In the 1870 census, they were living in Wapakoneta, Auglaize County, Ohio.
In the family were:
Robert D. Marshall, an attorney at law, age 36
his wife Elizabeth Ralston Marshall, age 31
Emma A. Marshall was 7,
Adda Ralston Marshall was 5,
Robert D. Marshall was 2,
Albertus McLaren Marshall was 6 months old.
In 1880, the family is living in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. Robert is a 46 year old lawyer. Elizabeth is 45. Emma is 17, Adda is 15, both at school. Little Robert Jr. died since the last census, on December 25, 1872. Albertus is 9. They have a servant, Sithyann Moody, age 36.
The 1890 Federal census was destroyed in a fire so the next census is 1900. Robert and Elizabeth are 65 and 64. They've been married for 40 years. Elizabeth's record says she had 5 children, 3 of whom are still living. All three of their children are sitll living at home, Emma - 37, Adda - 35, and Albertus - 30. Robert and Albertus are lawyers. They have a servant and a coachman living with them, Caroline Mitchell and William Hamlin.
In the 1910 census, Robert and Elizabeth are 76 and 75 years old, married now for 49 years, and still living in Dayton. Robert is still listed as an attorney. Daughter Adda is living with them as well as a servant, Catherine Gasson. Albertus is married now with his own household. I have been unable to find Emma. I haven't found her in the marriage or death indices but those online records are very incomplete. I have a note that her young neices called her "Ah-moo".
Elizabeth Ralston died November 8, 1911. Robert Dickson Marshall died April 24, 1912. They are both buried in Dayton at Woodland Cemetery.
In 1920, Adda is living with her brother's family. She is 55. Her brother's son, Robert Dickson Marshall III (my grandfather) was 17. He and his siblings knew her as "Ah-di".
Adda Marshall died in 1929 and is buried in Woodland Cemetary in Dayton.
